How to Read an Electric Meter

When reading your electric meter, simply write down the number the hand has passed.

Notice that some hands turn right and some turn left.

7 3 2 5 6

KILOWATT HOURS
If a hand is directly on a number, you may be uncertain whether to write down that number or the next lower number.

If the hand on the right has passed 0, write down the number to which the hand on the left is pointing. In this case it is a 7. If the hand on the right has not passed 0, write down the next lower number. In this case it is a 6.

Now look at this tougher reading

meter in between 7 and 8 meter pointing at 3 meter in between 9 and 0 meter in between 8 and 9 meter pointing at 8
7 2 9 8 8

KILOWATT HOURS
To calculate your usage, subtract the ending reading from the beginning reading. If your meter has a constant of 10, multiply the kilowatt hours used by 10 simply by adding a zero. Enter the total kilowatt hours used into the Bill Calculator.
