Frequently Asked Questions
How will the testing be done?
JEA will use a special machine to blow smoke in the sanitary sewer manholes. The smoke travels through the system and escapes by rising through openings. The rising smoke will show our testing team the locations of problems or potential problems.
Why do we need to test the sanitary sewer lines?
JEA wants to decrease cost and help the sanitary sewer system work more efficiently by identifying sources of clearwater entry into the system.
What is clearwater?
Clearwater is a term used to refer to rain water or irrigation water which flows into our sanitary sewer system. The flow burdens our sewer treatment facilities and should be handled by storm drains,
retention ponds, and natural runoff.
Will the smoke enter my home?
Smoke will not appear inside your home unless there are dry fixtures or problems with your sewer system.
How can I keep the smoke from appearing in my house?
Normally you don’t need to do anything. Make sure all sinks, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures have water in them (or in the traps). Pour water into the drain of any unused fixtures. This will force the smoke to exit out the rooftop vent.
What should I do if I see smoke in my house?
Contact any member of the JEA testing team working on your street or call Project Outreach at 665-7500.
If the smoke does enter my home, how long will the smoke stay in my house?
The smoke disappears quickly. To make it disappear faster, open a window or outside door near any smoky area.
Is the smoke harmful to me, my family, or my pets?
No, the smoke is similar to condensed air and is not harmful and has been used many times in many cities in similar types of testing.
