Project Objective

JEA upgraded the electrical equipment at several of our sanitary sewer pump stations located between our Blacks Ford Water Reclamation Facility located in northwest St. Johns County and the Mandarin Water Reclamation Facility located in the southern portion of the JEA service territory.

This project will help to improve the quality and reliability of the electric service at each sewer pump station, thereby increasing the reliability of operation at each of the stations. Failures to sewer pump stations can potentially cause major sewer back-ups and environmental harm.

Contractors working for JEA (Heart Utilities and E F Lea Electrical Contractors) worked with JEA crews to complete these upgrades that included installation of new electric transformers with concrete pads, new pumps and new pump controls, a new electric pole, and new protective conduit and electric cables.

The installation of the electric conduit and cables was performed using a technique called horizontal directional drilling (HDD). HDD requires very little excavation, reduces construction duration, and is less disruptive to the surrounding community.

Construction Conditions

Construction primarily occurred within the fenced areas of each pump station property and in City of Jacksonville rights-of-way and utility easements.
