Roads Affected
Main Street, Market Street, Newnan Street, Orange Street, Phelps Street
Project Objective
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began a $1.5 million project on February 22, 2016 to reconstruct and replace the Newnan/Hubbard Street Bridge over Hogan’s Creek, located next to Confederate Park in the Springfield Historic District.
A complete bridge and road closure is scheduled for the duration of the project, which is set to begin February 25. Newnan Street will be closed from Orange to Phelps streets. The detour route is Orange, Market and Phelps streets to Hubbard Street.
The Henry J. Klutho-designed bridge, built in 1929, is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. As part of the reconstruction project, architecturally significant features of the bridge will be removed and protected during construction. The project’s Restoration Specialist, Durable Restoration Company of Ohio, will oversee all aspects of the bridge restoration process and ensure that they meet the Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
The project includes removing the existing bridge deck while retaining the existing architectural walls. The roadway approaches will also be rebuilt to facilitate the bridge replacement. The project also includes refurbishing existing sidewalks and adding bike lanes.
FDOT awarded the contract to Hal Jones, Contractor, Inc. of Jacksonville, and ETM, Inc. is the Construction Engineer and Inspector. The project is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2016.
