Ortega Substation Electric Reliability Project

Estimated Dates & Work Schedule

Anticipated Start Date: 2016-02-03
Anticipated End Date: 2016-06-30

This project has been completed. The below information was provided to customers prior to the project start date.

Project Objective

JEA has begun construction to rebuild and upgrade the Ortega substation located at the corner of Verona Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard (4450 Verona Ave). When completed, this new substation will improve our electric service reliability to your neighborhood. JEA has determined that the existing electrical equipment for this substation is reaching the end of its service life and needs to rebuilt and upgraded to comply with current codes, industry standards and new technologies.

As part of this work, JEA will be replacing a portion of the existing electric transmission lines that currently exit this facility on poles with new upgraded transmission lines that will be placed in underground conduits and vaults to be installed along Verona Avenue. The overhead electric distribution lines and other utilities will remain overhead.

This work will substantially improve the reliability of the electrical system in your area as well as reduce the chances of overloading a circuit which can lead to unplanned power outages. These new facilities will also protect against birds and squirrels which are often the cause of many unplanned blips and power outages. It should be noted that JEA will not be doing any work at the individual electric meter that serves your home.

Construction Conditions

Construction will occur within JEA’s property located at 4450 Verona Ave and along Verona Avenue from Roosevelt Boulevard to Ortega Boulevard. Some clearing of trees and bushes will be required on the substation property prior to starting the substation construction. JEA will then remove the old equipment and replace it with upgraded transformers and switchgear units which will be situated inside the existing fence line.

Restoration of Project Area

Upon completion of the substation work, any existing pavement, grass, curb, gutter, driveways or sidewalks affected during construction will be returned to its pre-construction condition.
