Project Objective

Over the past year, a contractor working for JEA (JB Coxwell) has been working on a project to replace portions of the aging water and sanitary sewer infrastructure that serves your area. These pipes had reached the end of their service lives and needed to be proactively replaced to increase the reliability of the water and sewer system and to prevent future main breaks.

This project included the replacement of a section of a large, 60-inch diameter sanitary sewer pipeline under Walnut Street between E. 27th Street and E. 16th Street. The 60-inch “trunk sewer” was replaced by a new 36-inch gravity sewer main, which was rerouted and constructed on Liberty Street between E. 27th Street and E. 16th Street.

This project also included the replacement of all water mains and water services and sewer laterals to adjacent developed properties within the project limits. Water and sewer utilities on side streets were either reconstructed or connected to the new water and sewer system on Liberty Street. Storm sewers (drainage) and curbing replacement is being completed as needed throughout the project limits.

Restoration took place on portions of the project area where the pipes had been installed, tested and cleared for use. We also grout filled and abandoned the old sewer main.

Construction Conditions

For the safety of our crews and the general public, the contractor was required to periodically temporarily close and detour traffic at the intersections of N. Liberty Street and E. 16th Street, and Walnut Street and E. 16th Street.

    Restoration of the Project Area

Restoration of the project area typically begins 2-3 weeks after the new water and sewer main is installed, tested and cleared for use. Upon completion of the project, any existing pavement, grass, curb, gutter, driveways or sidewalks affected during construction will be returned to its pre-construction condition.
