JEA Upgrading Water Meters for All Customers

2023-06-13

JACKSONVILLE - This week, JEA will begin a transition to upgraded water meter technology, to ensure that all water users have more information about the amount of water they use and to help improve customer service. An enhanced, state-of-the-art Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology will be deployed to help phase out an obsolete radio interface system, giving customers an opportunity to more easily and quickly monitor their water consumption.

As part of this multi-year project, JEA will upgrade all of its 420,000 water meters for both residential and commercial customers, a process expected to last about four years. The installation will include either a new radio device that attaches to their water meter, or in certain areas, a new meter capable of working with the AMI system.

There are numerous benefits to the new metering technology, including:

  • Customers will be able to easily monitor their water consumption, which can help them to perhaps reduce their consumption and their monthly water bill.
  • Through this remote technology, JEA can perform readings more quickly and efficiently, eliminating manual readings in some neighborhoods.
  • JEA also will be able to identify potential water leaks more quickly and notify customers.

There is no additional cost to customers for the new meters.

JEA will notify customers in advance about their upgrades with postcards and email reminders on what to expect. Crews will begin work this week in Nassau County. Unfortunately, JEA cannot schedule individual appointments for meter replacements.

Customers do not need to be present during the upgrade process. However, if customers are present, they should be aware that technicians may need to briefly disconnect their water service while the work is being performed. The technician will notify customers upon arrival so they can be prepared for a service interruption should it be necessary. Once the work is complete, the technician will leave a door hanger at the address.

JEA has contracted with Envocore to install the devices. All technicians will wear an Envocore shirt and will drive a truck branded with JEA and Envocore logos.

If customers have questions, they may visit jea.com/watermeter or call 904-665-6000.
