Fall into Savings
Utility bills in the fall are typically lower than the summer and winter months. However, there are still quite a few energy-saving measures you can take to keep your bill as low as possible during the fall season. Try following some of these simple energy-saving tips to keep your energy costs down and savings up.
Inside the Home
- Seal gaps around window frames, exterior doors, and air ducts properly to prevent conditioned air from leaking out of your home.
- Switch to LED energy efficient bulbs that help keep lighting costs down. Be sure to recycle your old CFLs.
- Adjust your programmable thermostat to reflect the fall season. You may not need to run your cooling system the same as you did during summer months.
- Use a slow cooker for cooking rather than your oven as smaller appliances such as these use much less energy.
- When not in use, keep your chimney flue closed to prevent drafts from entering you home.
- When temperatures are comfortable outdoors, open windows and enjoy the cool air instead of running your heating and cooling system.
- Use power strips to cut power to electronics when not in use to help eliminate phantom loads.
Outside the Home
- As swimming season winds down, consider decreasing your pool pump runtime.
- Use solar outdoor lighting to reduce outdoor lighting costs and to light your sidewalk for guests.
- As daylight saving time comes to an end, your lawn will need less water. Become familiar with your new watering days.
