Concentrator Installation Project

Estimated Dates & Work Schedule

Anticipated Start Date: 2020-04-27
Anticipated End Date: 2021-06-30

The dates for this project will vary, as our contractor will be working throughout our service territory on installations. Customers within close proximity to the individual projects will be notified by door hanger.

Project Objective

JEA's primary objective for this project was to install the infrastructure required to electronically send and receive the readings from our remotely controlled electric and water meters. In order to perform this work, JEA will needed to install an electronic device called a “concentrator” near the existing transformer boxes in your neighborhood.

JEA also installed small antennas mounted on the light poles located throughout your area.  In some instances where there was not an existing light pole, a new light pole needed to be installed. Radio frequency surveys have been performed to determine which locations will provide the best overall coverage for your neighborhood.

After the work is completed, the new devices should eliminate the need for manual meter reads and to provide the most timely and accurate readings for our customers.

Construction Conditions

The concentrator box will be mounted next to an existing transformer box. This box is similar to the small green boxes currently deployed by Comcast and AT&T. An antenna will then be mounted to an existing light pole or a new light pole that will be installed by a contractor working for JEA (Landis and Gyr).

Property Owner Responsibilities

JEA requires access to its transformer and concentrator boxes at all times. This is necessary to safely operate and maintain our facilities.  JEA standards specify a minimum of a 3-foot clearance around the back and sides of the concentrator box and at least  a 15-foot accessible clearance across the front of our facilities.

JEA is requesting that homeowners transplant any vegetation that is  currently planted inside these boundaries to a new location prior to the project start date. Otherwise, the removal or cutting of any shrubs, trees or landscaping that are obstructing access to those transformer boxes will  be required by the contractor.

Restoration of the Project Area

Once the work is completed, any area(s) disrupted during the installation of the concentrator boxes will be restored to its original state provided that it does not interfere with JEA’s access to the box or transformer. Residents will be responsible for watering sod and/or plants that are replanted.
