Project Objective

JEA replaced and upgraded the main electric feeder line that serves the Hemlock Street area. We also upgraded and replaced  several of the power poles along Hemlock Street that have reached the end of their useful service lives and needed to be replaced.

Once completed, this work will allow for future growth in the area, while increasing the amperage capacity of the power line, thereby reducing chances of overloading the circuit which can lead to unplanned power outages.

Construction Conditions

The pole relocation portion of this project will allow JEA to maintain proper clearances in preparation for a future City of Jacksonville sidewalk improvement project along Hemlock Street. The new poles were installed approximately 2-3 feet toward private property, but still remain within the City of Jacksonville rights-of-way along Hemlock Street.

Once the new poles have been installed, AT&T and Comcast will return to relocate their services from the old poles to the new poles. Following this work, JEA will return to remove the old poles. Please see the work area map below.

Tree Trimming and Vegetation Management

Proper vegetative clearance is required around JEA poles and facilities to allow the project to move forward. The vegetative management objectives are to enhance the benefits and mitigate the hazards of both the electrical service and existing tree canopy. JEA tree crews receive additional training on how to maintain sensitive tree canopies and target new growth approaching JEA lines (the line at the top of most utility poles).

Learn more about out goal of balancing a tree's health with safety and electric reliability. Customers are encouraged to contact JEA Tree Care at (904) 665-6050 or at JEATreeCare@JEA.com with any questions they may have regarding trees and utilities.

Restoration of the Project Area

Restoration of the project area will typically take place 2-3 weeks after the new lines have been installed, tested and cleared for use. Any existing grass, sprinklers, pavement, curb, gutter, driveways and/or sidewalks affected during construction will be returned to its pre-construction condition.
