Estimated Dates & Work Schedule
Anticipated End Date: 2018-10-31
Project Objective
The purpose of this project is to structurally repair the steel H-pilings that support 7 JEA electric transmission towers which span from near the Atlantic Boulevard Intracoastal water way bridge to the area around 7 Pine Island, the Atlantic Highlands neighborhood and Hogpen Creek (see attached map for details). This work is considered standard maintenance for these types of structures and is expected to last over 30 years. This construction will not affect electric utility service in the area.
Project Work Details
The work includes the chipping of the existing concrete encasements to expose the H-piling; sand blasting the H-piling; drilling holes in the existing H-piling and bolting on new steel as required. Once this work is completed the contractor will encapsulate the H-piling with a fiberglass and epoxy grout system for long term corrosion protection.
Project Activities & Dates
Dredging Work
- Anticipated Start Date: Mid-January 2016
- Estimated Completion Date: April 2016
- Start and completion dates are subject to change
Transmission Tower Repair
- Anticipated Start Date: Currently underway
- Estimated Completion Date: January 2018
- Start and completion dates are subject to change
Construction Conditions
This project involves excavation and jetting around each tower to expose the H-pilings in order to perform the necessary structural repairs. To do so, the contractor will be required to do some minor dredging to access several of the towers. During the repair work, the contractor will be using excavators, pneumatic chipping hammers, hydraulic drills, sand blasters, generators and air compressors to complete the work.
Each tower will take approximately 1-2 months to complete. Nearby residents can expect to hear noise created by the equipment, construction lights (when required in the fall/winter), as well as temporary blocking of the nearby water channels. The contractor will be required to use fiberglass sound absorbing barriers, equipment with noise reducing exhaust and rubber mats on the work barge to assist with lowering sound levels from the construction area.

CEMI-4 & CEMI-5 - Electric Reliability Upgrades
CEMI-4 is a new metric that stands for Customers Experiencing More Than Four Outages of one minute or more in the past year. Similar to the CEMI-5 metric that has been utilized by JEA since 2014, the new CEMI-4 metric has helped us improve on our already unbeatable performance of low extended outage frequency and duration rates.
