Understanding the Causes of Higher Bills

Did you notice a significant change in your bill from last month? It’s important to recognize if there’s a change in your bill because it could indicate that something in your home has also changed. From adjusting your daily routine to seasonal shifts in the weather, understanding what factors impact your bill is the first step to identifying the cause.

Changes to Your Bill

Sometimes, the difference between your payment amounts is due to bill changes like fluctuating fuel charges, the length of your billing period, or a previous balance. We’re here to help you better understand these factors and how to identify them on your bill.

Fuel Charges

JEA’s fuel charges are “pass-through” costs based on how much JEA pays for the fuel it uses to generate electricity. View Monthly Fuel Rates.

Longer Billing Period

Our bill cycles can range from 28-32 days. If your bill is a little higher this month, compare the number of billing days in your billing cycle last month vs. this month. Check your billing statement.

Previous Balance

If you did not pay your last bill in full, the remaining balance will be added to your current amount due making it higher than normal. View a sample statement.

Rate Adjustment

On March 25, 2025, the JEA board of directors approved rate adjustments that went in to effect beginning on April 1, 2025. Learn more.

Changes in Consumption

Your daily habits can make a big difference in your electricity and water use. From stressing your AC to watering the yard more than needed, small changes can quickly add up. Shifts in routine—like school breaks, holidays, or even an unidentified leak—can raise your consumption without you realizing it. Spotting these patterns is the first step to using less and saving more.

Changes in Routine

Life at home isn’t always consistent. School breaks, holiday gatherings, and seasonal equipment like pool pumps can all increase utility use.

Changes in Habits and Consumption

HVAC

Most electric bill increases are related to your heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system since it’s responsible for up to 40% of your electric bill. Luckily, simple steps can help your system perform better and use less energy.

Water Leaks

Even small leaks can lead to significant water waste. Identifying and fixing leaks early helps you conserve water, protect your home and keep utility costs down.

Extreme Weather

Whether it's a heatwave or a cold snap, your HVAC system will have to work harder to keep you comfortable. Making small adjustments can help you stay efficient even when the weather is extreme.

The Weather Effect

Phantom Load

Some devices continue to use energy, even when they’re off. Unplugging unused devices or using smart power strips can help you reduce hidden energy waste and lower your bill.
