The Herlong UG to OH conversion project will install the infrastructure to convert the existing transmission UG cable entering the Herlong substation to an OH conductor, entering the Herlong substation above ground. This will be accomplished by the installation of a transmission dead-end structure that will be used as the termination point for the transmission overhead conductor.

To install the transmission dead-end structure, the contractor will construct the foundation for the transmission dead-end structure. To determine the distance between the existing UG transmission cable, a locate will be performed to determine the location of the transmission cable by the contractor. The preference is to have the contractor excavate for the installation of the concrete forms while the existing UG transmission cable is energized. The contractor will ultimately determine if the UG transmission cable can remain energized while excavation to install the foundation is in progress.

The contractor will install and connect the 7#5 to the main ground grid, as depicted in the grounding plan. The contractor shall use exothermic weld for the connection between the new 7#5 ground conductor and the existing 19#8 main ground grid.

The contractor shall erect and ground the steel structure, and install and the insulator (s), arrester(s), all bolted and weldment fittings, and all remaining overhead connections.
